Next Saturday, 26th March, at 11:00 am, the second piece of my sculpture "Somos abrazo" will be inaugurated. the second piece of my sculpture "Somos abrazo" will be inaugurated, the first to be placed in a public space. It is very moving for me to know that those who pass through the Plaza de Puerta de Madrid in Alcalá de Henares will receive this universal embrace, an embrace that will always remember all those who died of the covid-19 pandemic, an embrace that reflects the value that we have as human beings and that we should always keep in mind: solidarity.
When I began to model this work in the studio, I did so thinking that I wanted it to reach as many people as possible to share that long-awaited reunion, that comfort and that feeling of welcome that is so necessary, an embrace to be able to move forward. I never imagined what this work would give me in return...
The fact that this sculpture is presented in Alcalá de Henares, the birthplace of Cervantes and a World Heritage Site, means that the reason I created it has a universal dimension. I sincerely thank the City Council of this beautiful city for their confidence in representing, through this work, that feeling that has united us and that brings us closer through emotion.
It is always a unique moment, just like when I open an exhibition. Every time my works are shown to the public they are seen for the first time, new glances that will encounter the emotion that I left reflected in them. A little bit of me inhabits them, but a little bit of the person who feels them and discovers them is also hidden, then something inexplicable happens, that emotion that lies dormant inside comes to life again when it is perceived. Without knowing it, as spectators we connect with the artist and somehow that connection is shared for an instant, waiting for us every time we return to that work that moved us.
That universal embrace that expresses my work "We are embrace" never ceases to amaze me, every time someone approaches it they have to touch it, caress it and you can see the emotion in their gaze. When I see it in the studio, alone, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for having been able to share in it what I consider to be the true essence that gives meaning to our existence: that embrace that unites us, consoles us and gives us the strength to go on. Emotion without words to remember those who are no longer here and to welcome those we have not seen for a long time, silent emotion that says it all.
You can imagine what it means to me to concentrate so much emotion, pain, overcoming, hope and love in this work. We must not forget what the covid19 pandemic has meant for all of us and what we have learned from these difficult times.... In the end, what we really need is that embrace that welcomes us to regain our strength and move forward, that embrace that we offer from the heart to share who we are.
Saturday will be a very emotional, solemn and specialday. When my work is unveiled, you will not see a sculpture, there will be the emotion that we all carry inside. I am very grateful for the opportunity to share the power of art as a universal language and to welcome those who visit this beautiful city with this embrace.
My remembrance also to those who are no longer with us and my affection for those who mourn their loss, in our hearts will always remain their embrace.
Thank you!
